Best for: the face
Get this: Non-streak bronzer from Clinique skin supplies for men
Why? Aside from obvious Tango tidemarks, smell is the one big tell-tale sign when it comes to faking it. This easily absorbed bronzer from Clinique is just about the only product on the market that doesn't reek of coconut or digestive biscuits. It is entirely odour-free which means that you can go in for a kiss without giving the game away. And it absorbs to its final colour instantly, meaning you don't have to prat about in the nud for hours waiting for it to dry. The only downside is that it doesn't contain an SPF. Not that that matters on a night out.
How much? £13 for 60ml

Best for: hairless bodies
Get this: Express Hydrating Self-Tan Spray by Decleor
Why? Again, it's one of the least pungent products available and being a spray it is easy to apply fairly evenly. The tanning agents in this are 100% organic if you're worried about coating yourself in noxious creosote. Make sure you use the spray in a tiled bathroom, otherwise you might end up pebble-dashing the wood-chip.
How much? £20.50 for 150ml

Best for: hairy bodies
Get this: Instant Bronze Foam by Lancaster
Why? Sprays are not as suitable for hairy bodies as the mist tends to coat the hairs rather than the frighteningly white skin lurking somewhere beneath the canopy. The more hirsute should opt for a cream, milk or foam. Sun experts Lancaster do one of each, Lord love ‘em. Go for this foam one which works straight away and washes off in a hot shower so you don't have to wait ages for it to work and then go away again.
How much? £17.50 for 150ml
Where from? 0800 376 0688

Best for: auto airbrushing
Get this: Bronze Expert from By Terry
Why? One of the benefits of the sun is that it tends to clear the skin up of any spots and pimples. This subtle stick fulfils that function to combine smoothing correction with a just-stepped-off-the-beach look. Only without the sand getting everywhere.
How much? £38 for 17ml

Best for: building up a subtle tan
Get this: Holiday Skin Body Lotion by Johnson's
Why? Not everyone wants to suddenly turn a livid shade of Oompa loompa overnight. It tends to prompt awkward questions than elicit even more awkward lies: "Oooh, been anywhere nice?" or "What's Willy Wonka like to work for?" For a more subtle effect, build up slowly with this cheap-as-chips body lotion that contains a small amount of tanning ingredient. You will need to scrub it off completely every few days though – it begins to get a bit icky in a Jodi Marsh kind of way after a while.
How much? £4.95 for 250ml
Where from? Your local BootsTest the product on an unexposed area, like your inner wrists, to see how your skin reacts to it.
2. Wash and exfoliate your face and body thoroughly before applying the product (so as to wash away any dead skin, which can make the tan uneven and blotchy). Concentrate on areas that are prone to excessive dryness like your joints (elbows, ankles and knees).
3. Once your face and body are dry, apply the product. On your face, apply it only to the upper cheeks, forehead and nose, which will mimic the effect of a natural tan. (Note: Any application of a self-tanner to your beard area can result in an uneven, fake-looking tan because skin pigments are deeper in that area.) On your body, apply the self-tanner by rubbing it onto your skin in circular motions (rather than up and down) and use less tanner on your joints. Depending on the product, you may have to re-apply several times during the first day of use in order to see a difference.
4. Make sure to wash your hands thoroughly after use (self-tanners can stain your clothing and can also show up on your hands, resulting in blotchiness), or better yet, use latex gloves when applying the product.
5. Don't get dressed for at least 15 minutes after applying the product.
An inexpensive product from a local pharmacy may be just as good as those offered in upper scale retail outlets and specialty stores. You may want to try several products to see which one works best with your own skin and coloring; in this case, it is about trial and error. A patch test (again, on the inside of your wrists) while you're in the store can be a good indication of expected results.
Products come in a range of color depths, depending on the level of concentration of the active ingredient. It is far more cost-effective to opt for the darkest shade of tanning cream and apply it more sparingly in order to obtain the same results as a lighter shade of the same product.
Self-tanning product suggestions
Neutrogena offers a very natural-looking line of inexpensive products that are hypoallergenic and won't block pores. Its cream is particularly light by comparison to many other brands, and leaves skin looking matte — a particularly good thing if you're prone to breakouts and/or have an oily complexion.
California North also offers a notable self-tanning product; its "Titanium Self Tanner" also serves as a minimal sunscreen with an SPF of 7, offering protection from the sun while you reap the rewards of a sunless tan.
A personal favorite is Sea & Ski's "Deep Dark Sunless Self Tanning Lotion." This product is by far one of the most inexpensive and effective on the market, offering the deepest possible tan for about $6 US a tube. Armed with vitamin E oils, its moisturizing effect may tend to make your skin look oily after application, but the long-term results are excellent.
3- Maintain your color Now that you've been to the tanning salon and found a sunless tanning lotion that works for you, how do you make your tan last? The answers lie in moisturizing and consistent re-application of a self-tanning product.
Moisturize
Moisturizing your skin will keep it looking healthy and hydrated, and helps in the anti-aging process. It's important to moisturize year round, especially when tanned, as it prevents your skin from peeling.
Make sure to moisturize consistently following a trip to the tanning salon; this will serve to prolong your tan. Keep in mind that color obtained from a visit to the tanning salon can be maintained by visiting the salon as little as once a month.
Apply tanning creams
The beauty of sunless tanning products is that they usually double up as moisturizers (it's therefore advisable to alternate between a sunless tanning cream and your favorite moisturizer). Make sure to wash your face twice daily, especially when using such products so as to scrub away any excess residue.

Utan Self Tan Mousse Medium — California Sun — Medium (£25.50)

SPECIAL PROMISE: Added moisturisers give the body smoother, firmer contours.
EASE OF APPLICATION: The mousse is brown so you can see which bits you’ve missed. Use a mitt.
SMELL: That cloying fake-tan smell was very strong as I applied the mousse. But it disappeared quickly once it dried.
COLOUR: Exactly the kind of  sun-kissed tan that fair-skinned women like me hanker after. And no streaks either!
FADE: Gradual (and streak free) over the course of five days.
SCORE: 9.5/10 (half a point deducted as I saw no evidence of body-sculpting).

Famous Dave’s Gradual 10 Self Tanner (£17.99)

SPECIAL PROMISE: Natural active ingredients, antioxidants and organic oils.
EASE OF APPLICATION: A white lotion (colourless products make me nervous about coverage) but this one was very light and easily absorbed which made it easier to apply several layers.
SMELL: It had a stronger fake-tan smell than I would have hoped from a product that pushes its natural and organic properties.
COLOUR: The mid-caramel colour developed very nicely and was completely non-streaky.
FADE: This one lasted quite a long time and I was still tanned a  week later.
SCORE: 9/10.

Soltan Beautiful Bronze  Self-Tan Mousse — Light/Medium (£9.99)

SPECIAL PROMISE: A long-lasting summer scent.
EASE OF APPLICATION: Extreme care is needed when dispensing this product. Very little pressure on the nozzle released a ball of mousse the size of a tennis ball. Who knows what state the bathroom would have been in if I’d been more heavy-handed...
SMELL: Finally a product that really doesn’t smell of fake tan. The smell instead was delicate and faintly floral.
COLOUR: The initial colour of the product on my skin was quite alarming, more pink than brown. I looked as though I’d been in an industrial accident. However  once the tan developed a few hours later, the pinkness disappeared and I was left with quite a strong tan. It was too dark for me but if you want a deep tone this one will suit.
FADE: Fade was even and happened over five days.
SCORE: 7/10
