SWINGING SIXTIES

 THE SWINGING SIXTIES 

My friend John said to me "We have to go to Carnaby Street" So I replied "Why"? And he replied, "Cos it is swinging". I asked, "What is swinging"? He answered, "I don't know but sounds good ". We were both about nine and we went. We left Islington and went towards Carnaby Street. It was very quick on the tube but it felt like going somewhere very far. We bought stuff. He bought cowbells and I bought an underground magazine. I enjoyed it as it was something really strange but great.

 "The Swinging Sixties was a  cultural revolution that took place in the United Kingdom during the mid-to-late 1960s, emphasising modernity and fun-loving hedonism, with Swinging London as its centre.

It saw a flourishing in art, music and fashion, and was symbolised by the city's "pop and fashion exports". Among its key elements were pop groups and fashion. There was the iconic status of popular shopping areas such as London's Kings Road, Kensington and Carnaby Street; the political activism of the anti-nuclear movement. Sexual liberation was another key thing.

 Swinging London also meant British Cinema but as someone who saw most of the 60s films because I used to bunk off school a lot, I can tell you it was most dire, the most crap films ever.

During this period, "creative types of all kinds gravitated to the capital, from artists and writers to magazine publishers, photographers, advertisers, film-makers and product designers".If the Fifties were in black and white, then the Sixties were in Technicolor. The ‘Swinging Sixties’ remain the defining decade for Britain. In just ten short years, London had transformed from the bleak, conservative city, only just beginning to forget the troubles of the Second World War, 

But for most, it was carry on moaning. Jobs paid very little and if you couldn't get on the bandwagon of the new industry which was basically selling clothes and music to youngsters outside of the Carnaby Street and Kings Road radius there was not much going on apart from lots of nightclubs and dance halls.

By the 1960s, the first teenage generation free from conscription emerged in Britain. Young people were finally given a voice and freedom to do what they wanted, some did have a voice but mostly the educated university types fighting for an end to the war in Vietnam and maybe a revolution in Europe. The Vietnam war was seen as one of the great injustices that America ever did to another country and the war was totally uncalled for as Vietnam after they had fought with the Americans and eliminated the Japanese wanted an alliance with America.

Others like the Mods were only interested in fashion and music. Fashion in the decade mirrored many of the social changes of the Sixties. Mary Quant became famous for popularising the mini skirt which became the epitome of 1960s fashion. The mini was designed to be free and liberating for women, allowing them to “run and jump”. Her fashion designs used simple geometric shapes and colours which gave women a new kind of femininity. Women were free to wear more playful, youthful clothes that would have seemed outrageous ten years before. By the late Sixties, psychedelic prints and vibrant colours began appearing on clothes as the hippie movement gathered pace.

 The contraceptive pill became legalised for all women in 1967 and allowed them to broaden their hopes and dreams far beyond motherhood and marriage. It was the greatest liberating invention for women along with sanitary inventions.

 The Women’s Liberty movement was in its infancy when in 1968 at a Ford factory in Dagenham, 850 women went on strike, arguing for equal pay with their male co-workers. This action resulted in the passing of the Equal Pay Act of 1970.

 One of the biggest, defining aspects of the 1960s was music. Although rock and roll began having an effect on Britain in the 1950s, it wasn’t until the early Sixties and the emergence of ‘British Invasion groups like The Beatles, that music truly began its revolutionary changes. The Beatles are an excellent example of how music influenced the lives of young Britons. Although they continued the rock and roll genre of the 1950s for the early part of the decade, by 1967 Sgt Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band became the turning point in music and inspired other musicians, such as The Beach Boys and The Rolling Stones, to experiment with new sounds and develop innovative pieces of music. Their later albums included lyrics encouraging rebellion against the authorities, as seen in ‘Revolution’. Recreational drugs were also synonymous with the Sixties. Technological advancements of the 1960s drastically changed how people spent their leisure time. The increase in employment in factories and increase in money allowed people to spend more on leisure activities. Colour television and pocket transistor radios allowed people to spend their free time listening to music and watching TV. Every teenager owned a transistor radio allowing them to listen to pop music on the move.  By the end of the decade, Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin achieved the impossible by becoming the first men on the moon in 1969. The Sixties ended as if it had never happened. Everything became too commercial and the dream was over.

We need to ask if poverty impacts good child supervision as children may grow up to be

 thieves. Poverty might mean parents work

 several jobs so can’t supervise their kids.

 Or poverty could mean parents live on benefits and spend a lot of time with their children.

 So before we say poverty causes crime, we need to ask what  poverty entails

 for different communities? 

Poverty matters in lots of little ways, both good and bad. In the west, poverty doesn't mean the

 same as poverty in India where people literally live unsheltered by railway tracks in the hope

 of getting scraps thrown to them. 

You may ask surely if kids who live in poor

 communities were to live in more affluent areas, their futures would be different, and they

 would be less likely to be criminals?

 There was an experiment in New York, Baltimore, Los Angeles, Boston, and Chicago where

 this actually happened. In Moving to Opportunity, 5,000 families were subsidized to move

 from poor to affluent areas. The results were surprising. Ten years on, the boys in those

 families were 20 percent more likely to have been excluded from school than those who

 stayed behind. They were also more likely to have been arrested, though interestingly they

 were less likely to have been arrested for violent crime. In this case, moving poor kids to rich

 areas didn't make them less likely to be criminals, but it did change the type of crime they

 were likely to commit.

THE RADICAL LEFT AND POVERTY

People are unbelievably ignorant about history. What young people know about 20th-century history is nonexistent, especially about the history of the radical left.  They’re never taught anything about it in schools, so why would they be concerned about it? It’s easy to understand why people are emotionally drawn to the ideals of socialism, let’s call it the present day  left because it draws its fundamental motivational source from compassion.

But the leftists and the rightists do not understand the idea of fairness. That of accepting that something could be true even though it is totally different from your own idea. People with preconceived ideas whoever they are commit intellectual suicide because they believe that something is true because they want it to be true. I have learned with time that many assumptions are nearly always wrong because life is not black and white. Human life is complex. Nature is too. There’s a debate about free speech on many leftist university campuses. But what you don’t understand is it isn’t a debate about who can speak, it’s a debate about whether there is such a thing as free speech and the answer from the leftist radicals is that there isn’t. Basically, there is one idea and that's ours. This is as far as American universities go. For them , group identity is paramount. You have no unique voice. You’re a mouthpiece of your identity group. If you sway from the group identity then you are anathema. It is understandable in a way because both Fascist and Communist ideology is based on the group voice .

 But that said fairness is absolutely essential, an absolutely essential component of peace. Fairness can only exist if you will listen to the truth. Truth comes from the analysis of something. Idiocy comes from opinions based on zero or little knowledge.

If you will not then there is no point in engaging in discussion. For the left Poverty is about crime because with that argument you can quickly put the thing under the ideals you believe in. But poverty existed for years in many communities where there was very little crime so we can say the idea that poverty means crime is a weak one.

What the third world does appals lots of people in the West and sometimes rightly so. This week hundreds of decaying dead covid victims were abandoned in India plus children blown up by Terrorists in Afghanistan. 

Their cities look like post-nuclear strikes today. For instance, Karachi in Pakistan was left superbly maintained by the British but now the whole place is falling apart. I saw a photo of it just after independence and it looked clean and neat. It's now nearly all one big dump.  if we look at Indian and Pakistani cities, at least from the YouTube videos I have seen, you will understand. That said I have often seen westerners put their western values onto the people of the third world. 

Let us look at something close to home, the Riders, most are third-world immigrants plus some Italians. The pay seems to be 1k a month circa and the positive parts are you have at least a way out of the ghetto and then secondly you get amazingly fit cycling around all day. Capitalism, of course, is using these people to make money out of them but nevertheless, they might be begging now instead of making money for no one really cares about them in a real sense. Apart from the riders sit to think about teachers in Italy, people like me. There can be no greater exploitation than to pay an English expert 1,300 euros a month. That is why the people who are supposed to be "madrelingua" teachers in the Italian school system are nearly all Italians and therefore, obviously, fakes. 

Most of the caring is just words nothing more . I always say why don't give one that spare room in your house to someone you supposedly care about who lives in bad conditions. At that point, the conversation usually stops. 

The world at the moment according to high-level study is down in poverty as never before. Is this because of capitalism ?_ I do not really  know but it seems to me that those who denounce the people who make money out of the Riders could not answer the following question? 

Ok, so we outlaw this operation yeh? So what do we put in its place?

There are also those Western liberal types who denounce child labour in the Third World. If a family turned around and said "Yes but that's how we can get by" What would the western liberal offer? 

In 1912 my 12-year-old Grandfather drove a horse and cart through London. He actually enjoyed it because he earned good money. He gave it to his poor Mother. No complaints just his lot in life. 

 Would be intellectuals trying to sound cool to their friends ignore the reality of the third world. It's the school of hard knocks and it's not pretty. People living badly and maybe often of their own making and often not. Would they have been much better off under colonial rule? Well, that depends on the Country. Not Belgium whenslaved everyone anden killed or mutilated them in the Congo. What about the British?  Maybe.

The inland quality of the UK’s freshwater supply declined significantly after the Second World War until the 1980s when the government enacted a series of policies aimed at improving freshwater quality.

On the other hand, marine and coastal habitats have declined significantly over the last 60 years. Demand for coastal housing, tourism, and industrial facilities has been behind this decline. Not only has the quality of these ecosystems declined, but the disappearance of coastal marshes and soft cliffs has increased the risk for further erosion and coastal flooding, according to the UK NEA.

Rising seawater temperatures and exploitation of marine resources have led to a serious loss of quality in UK marine ecosystems. Coastal fisheries are in decline and widespread trawling has significantly disrupted the coastal seabed.

In addition to this, there has been a recent focus on saving endangered species in the UK. Beloved creatures, such as the hedgehog, have declined from 36 million to only 1 million in the last 70 years. Other animals like the red squirrel and the tortoiseshell butterfly have become increasingly rare due to the destruction of habitat and the introduction of non-native predators.

A Clean Future for the UK?

The UK is currently in the midst of ‘Brexit’ and it is believed that this will have major consequences for environmental law since EU law is integrated tightly into the UK’s. However, it is believed that most of the environmental policies introduced within the 4 decades of being in the EU will remain. It will now be up to the UK government to implement stricter environmental laws to meet the commitments that have been promised to the public.

When you are young, a teenager, then that's the time to get really fit because if you start then you can keep on all through your life avoiding many of the problems that come later in life. And the beauty is you need an hour a day. As soon as you wake up have a decent breakfast but not too fatty. Have a slice of toast with some fruit and yogurt and a coffee. Try to avoid sugar. After finding some steps, in your house or elsewhere and start to do reps up and down. On the first day do five and every day after add one. 

Do one in the morning and one in the afternoon. Eat sparingly but if you are training you can more or less eat what you want but avoid fatty foods. It won't be for at least two weeks before you feel slimmer and fitter but after 2 months you'll be really fit and slim . Also if you have to go out walk everywhere if possible and walk in the quickest way you can.

The teenage years are important in terms of both mental and physical development, and staying fit during adolescence can have benefits that are both physical and psychological. The fitness habits a teenager develops during adolescence are likely to last a lifetime, and studies have shown that exercise can be beneficial to a teen's overall health while promoting a positive body image.

The American College of Sports Medicine and the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommend that a teenager spend at least 30 minutes doing some type of physical activity each day 2. Unfortunately, physical activity seems to diminish for many when they reach the teenage years. In fact, a study published in the March 2006 issue of "Medicine & Science in Sports & Exercise" found that more than half of about 2,000 girls surveyed, all between the ages of 16 and 18, were classified as sedentary.

There are various physical benefits associated with being physically active during the teenage years. According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, physical fitness should be a key component in the life of a teenager, as exercise can help build strong bones, muscles, and joints, and keep the teen generally healthy 

 In addition, exercise will also help a teenager control his weight by building lean muscle while burning fat. Another physical benefit of fitness is that it can reduce blood pressure in teenagers who have hypertension.

A European study appearing in the December 2009 issue of the "Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences" found a direct correlation between a teenager's level of physical fitness and IQ. Using a government database, researchers examined data on 1.2 million young men born in Sweden between 1950 and 1976 who received physical and intelligence assessments when they enlisted in the military. The study concluded that being physically fit at age 18 is linked to having a higher IQ, and increases the likelihood of higher-than-average educational and professional achievements in adulthood.

Body Image

A positive body image can result in an increased sense of self-esteem that will enhance other aspects of a teenager's life, and fitness can be an important component in creating a positive body image. In a study published in the April 1997 issue of "Perceptual and Motor Skills," several college-aged women participated in a six-week fitness-and-wellness program, intending to measure changes in body image during that time 4. The study concluded that participation in this fitness program provided the young women with "a positive, proactive, empowered attitude toward their own health and well-being."

According to a new study, most Europeans believe the EU could fall apart within the next two decades.

Research published this week showed that levels of support for membership of the European Union are high – but so is pessimism about the future of the bloc.

The survey, conducted by the European Council on Foreign Relations (ECFR) and YouGov, had more than 60,000 respondents across 14 EU member states.

It found that in every member state except Spain, the majority of voters believe the EU will fall apart within the next 10 to 20 years.

In France, 58% of respondents said it was realistic that the bloc would collapse within two decades, with 57% of Italian and Polish voters agreeing to that. Even in Spain, 40% of respondents said it was a realistic possibility that the EU could fall apart.

The data showed that most Europeans saw the collapse of the single market as the biggest loss should the EU break down, followed by free travel across borders and the freedom to live and work in other countries.

A European war?

Significant proportions of people surveyed also said a war between EU countries was a realistic possibility over the next decade.

Austrians were most likely to believe a European war was possible, with 38% saying it could happen within 10 years, followed by 35% of French respondents and 31% of Romanians.

The belief was also particularly strong among younger people. In Austria and Romania, half of those aged between 18 and 24 believed a war between EU members was possible, while 46% of the youngest respondents in France agreed.

According to the report, there was a greater tendency to hold this belief among supporters of far-right parties, particularly Rassemblement National in France, the Freedom Party of Austria, the Party for Freedom in the Netherlands, Jobbik in Hungary, and Golden Dawn in Greece. However, many who supported mainstream parties also thought a European war was possible within 10 years, the study found. 

The E.U has created tension itself in the past by unfairly targeting countries they feel it's ok to criticize and they have failed to do so with countries considered as friends despite a few of these countries having violent reactions to citizens. You may remember Catalonia and the persecution of Palestinians. The E.U has mooted the idea many times of a European army. What does that mean if not war? If you do anything you need a reason. Nothing is done for nothing. So an army needs an enemy. Who is the enemy of the E.U? If you do not believe that think about American arms build-up. Who were they building against? You can also create an enemy that does not exist. The first world war had no visible enemies who were threatening sovereign nations but war erupted anyway.

Economic split

Across all the countries included in the survey, a minority of voters said they believed young people had more economic opportunities than older generations.

There was also widespread insecurity among respondents that they were doing less well financially than people living in other EU nations. In Greece, more than 70% of people felt they had fewer economic opportunities than people in other European countries, while just over half of respondents in Romania, Spain, and Italy believed they had an economic disadvantage. Italy, in my humble opinion, seems to do things without much sense or logic. The Euro created a situation in one night where the money the Italians had in the bank was worth half. I remember a video machine I wanted that the day before the Euro it was on sale for 100 Mila. The next day it was 100 Euro. That meant 200 Mila lire. That example, in a nutshell, was how Italians were sold down the river by their government. The Italians made zero protests but merely accepted what Rai told them about the Euro. Rai TV, like the BBC, is about propaganda. No honest journalist would tell you differently. The propaganda is lying by omission. (Yesterday we saw Rai broadcasts sympathizing with the Israelis but not telling you why Palestinians are launching rockets ).

The word top-heavy and EU support

The word top-heavy means that a company or any organization has too many people, this is as regards organizations. Most of the British who voted to leave complain about all the people they see as basically top-heavy are really doing very little inside the E.U especially E.U ministers who frequently do not attend meetings but expect to be paid. 

One is a famous Italian M.P. My own view on this is the same as my compatriots. My view is very simple. Why do we need an E.U parliament to further trade? Why can't we have a European agreement where we agree to not have customs and to not have to pay tax on imported goods with all the countries in the European Union. As regards the free travel of Europeans I have another idea. This idea is simple, for every European that wants to live in another European country then there is reciprocation. One for one. This would stop the mad rush to some places that have seen their own citizens pushed out of their own homes because of free entry into another European country. London is the prime example. An ordinary Londoner can't buy a home in his own city. 

It is not just European nations, but, but of an ordinary home is sky-high. You have to earn 14,000 euros a month to be considered for a home if you want to buy it which means a minimum salary of 145,000 a year in pounds sterling. There is also the argument that a strong E.U stops the war. This is not true. Most European countries are part of NATO and it is illegal to declare war on another European nation. 

So the point of the EU is basically only a couple of things that of helping out other European countries with a European fund paid for by all European countries. The point is why should the U.K pay for a school to be built in Italy? Or anything else. We could just have a basic agreement that any country threatened by hunger and national calamity would be helped by all European countries We could also agree to let young people go to another country for study. All of these things would resolve everything and no need for a European parliament. 

Earlier this month, research from Eurobarometer showed 68% of European voters outside the U.K. felt their country had benefited from EU membership – the highest level since 1983. The view was shared in all EU countries aside from Italy.

According to Eurobarometer’s report, close to 70% of respondents would vote to stay in the EU, with an absolute majority of voters in 25 member states saying they would vote to remain. A relative majority would likely be won in Italy, Czechia, and the U.K., researchers found. However, the number of respondents who said they were undecided on how they would vote in a referendum has risen, with respondents in Italy – where a third of people did not know how they would vote – the most uncertain in the EU.

THE DUNNING KRUGER EFFECT 

It is a common tendency for some people to overestimate their competence in one or other areas. They may exhibit utmost confidence in areas where they have no knowledge. This effect is known as the Dunning-Kruger effect. The Dunning-Kruger effect was coined after two psychologists David Dunning and Justin Kruger. It is defined as a type of cognitive bias whereby people with limited knowledge or competence in a specific area largely overestimate their knowledge.

The scope of people's ignorance is often invisible to them. This  ignorance of ignorance arises because of lack of expertise and knowledge.

  I describe the Dunning–Kruger effect, in which poor performers in many social and intellectual domains seem largely unaware of just how deficient their expertise is.

 Their deficits leave them with a double burden—not only does their incomplete and misguided knowledge lead them to make mistakes but those exact same deficits also prevent them from recognizing when they are making mistakes and other people choosing more wisely.

 Khan the London mayor is an example. At the height of the covid pandemic he said London Transport is safe and it does not matter if carraiges are crowded, a very very stupid idea but said with the utmost sincerity .He has made other sincere comments that angered many people such as "people in London must get used to terrorism".

The film dumber and dumber is an extreme example of the Dunning Kruger effect (in Italian scemo piu scemo).

I think that a comment I heard the other day was spot on regarding this  "When a leftist does not understand something they call it fascist" (These are the juvenile-minded would be leftists, not a true leftist who one may respect.) This relates to the Dunning Krueger effect where totally unfounded belief or belief in our ability is total without realistic possibility and if something cannot be explained a label is put on it.

 Employers conduct a performance review, but some employees are not open to constructive criticism due to the Dunning-Kruger effect. The employees start to make excuses, such as the employer doesn’t like me rather than finding and correcting their own faults.

This happened to me. A student asked to explain globalization came out with a load of old mumbo jumbo and I could not understand anything. I gave her 4 despite giving her many chances to explain, Result in her Mother rings   up angry saying her daughter is victimized 

EXAMPLE 3 Let's say you are a leftist or a liberal or a rightist. You read something or hear something that might be totally logical and truthful but as soon as you start to read it you think it goes against your preconceived ideas you then say this is rubbish but do not understand that you have said it just because it goes against your belief, You are therefore intellectually dead and cannot honestly debate something.

Relief for parents? Study of over 400,000 teens reveals social media is 'no more harmful' to youngsters' mental health than TV was in the 1990s

  Researchers from Oxford University used data from three large surveys to look into the lives of more than 400,000 young people in the UK and US.

  It is popularly believed that new technology, particularly social media, is responsible for declining mental health among young people and a range of other social ills. The team explored the associations between technology use and mental health problems in teenagers, declaring the link between the two is 'thin at best'.  

  They found some limited link between emotional problems and social media, but no 'smoking gun' pointing to any wider mental health problems linked to its use. Lead author Dr Matt Vuorre says concerns of this type are not new, nor are they well justified by current data.

  He compared the 'fear of social media' to  warnings of 'square eyes' if children watch too much television, or that radio would turn teens to a life of crime. 

  Then, as now, says Dr Vuorre, the popular idea does not appear to be supported by hard evidence, or that technology use has become more harmful over time. 

  'Any understanding of 21st-century adolescence would be incomplete without an appreciation of social-media platforms and other digital technologies, which have become an integral element of young people’s everyday lives over the past few decades,' the team wrote. 

  The research involved three large surveys of young people who reported on their personal use of technology and various mental health-related issues. Using this large data set, the team set about investigating links between technology use and mental health problems, and whether they have increased over time.

  They studied this question by modelling four different mental health outcomes against three forms of technology use across three large nationally representative data sets.

  From these eight models, they found one clinically relevant self-reported mental health outcome, depression, for which the links to technology use had become consistently less negative over time.

  However, this decline was found for both television and social media. 

  According to Dr Vuorre, these survey responses do not establish a smoking gun link between the use of technology and mental health issues.He said nor do they show technologies have become more harmful over time.

  'We did find some limited associations between social media use and emotional problems, for instance,' he said.

  The researcher added that 'it is hard to know why they are associated.'

  'It could be a number of factors [perhaps people with problems spend more time on social media seeking peer support?].

  'Furthermore, there was very little evidence to suggest those associations have increased over time.'In fact, according to the new research, 'technology engagement had become less strongly associated with depression in the past decade, but social-media use had become more strongly associated with emotional problems.'

  The study concludes: 'The argument that fast-paced changes to social media platforms and devices have made them more harmful for adolescent mental health in the past decade is, therefore, not strongly supported by current data either.'

  These results don't mean that technology is all good for teens, or all bad, or getting worse as it is 'difficult to determine the role of technology in young people's lives'. 

  'Even with some of the larger data sets available to scientists, it is difficult conclusively to determine the roles of technologies in young people's lives, and how their impacts might change over time,' said Dr Vuorre. 'Scientists are working hard on these questions, but their work is made more difficult by the fact that most of the data collected on online behaviours remains hidden in technology companies' data warehouses.'

  In the context of older technologies, such as TV, knowledge of social-media and digital-device use is necessarily limited by their comparatively brief existence.

  Therefore, researchers say their results may partly reflect the shorter observation window of social-media and digital-device use, in comparison with TV.

  Dr Vuorre adds: 'We need more transparent research collaborations between independent researchers and technology companies. Before we do, we are generally in the dark.'

  The findings have been published in the journal Clinical Psychological Science.
